Energy Resources Breakdown

Hawaii depends mostly on petroleum and oil as its energy source, as Hawaii does not have natural gas reserves, nuclear power, or large rivers to drive hydroelectric plants.

Breakdown of Imported Oil Usage
The oil imported into Hawaii in 2001, had roughly 32% used to generate electricity. About 61% was used for transportation like airplanes, cars, and ships. The oil that Hawaii does import is also refined as it is still in its crude form. This crude oil is made into jet fuel (~27%), naphtha (~11%, which is used as a solvent), gasoline (~18%), and diesel (12%).

Tour de trash

This is a site for free schedueld tours that give a peek into the waste management process.
http://www.opala.org/recycling_business/Tour_de_trash_2006.htm

There is one in july on construction and demolition. july 27 after summer school. Giant piles of metal to be recycled.

One of the tours occurs in September on a thursday for recycling and waste processors. This tour goes to waimanalo gulch, H-POWER, and composting place

The last tour occurs in November about company recycling, and how it saved them money. Youngs laundry saving money using cooking oil is an example of companies saving money through recycling. I was thinking that perhaps punahou could use some of the methods already used by others as an action step.

Electronics Recycling for Business

http://www.computerrecyclingusa.com/

This website is a way for people all around the U.S. to recycle computers, monitors, and moreelectronics. It has a procedure of how to mail the electronics in step by step. For use by anyone in America, this site shows that recycling electronics is accessible. You must ship and mail the electronic device yourself and when they receive it they recycle it. This is taking action, which is needed, and I know that I would've do this with any electronic device if I had known about it rather than throw it away into a landfill. I hope you all feel the same way.

Hawai'i 2050 Sustainability Task Force Report

The State of Hawaii Auditor prepared this report to the Governor and the Legislature of the State of Hawai'i in December 2005. It recommends a planning process for the state to adopt in order to secure a sustainable future for Hawaii. It notes that "With housing prices nearing $600,000statewide for a single family home, traffic jams on all islands, groundwater supply at dangerously low levels to sustain current and future development, Hawai'i 's heavy reliance on increasingly expensive oil in a volatile global energy market, continued over-dependency on a low-wage tourism economy, depletion of natural resources and parts of Hawai'i's fragile ecosystems, steady deterioration of public infrastructures, an inadequate public education system, possible interruptions in travel, shipping, and supplies that Hawai'i relies on from distant sources, and population growth particularly on the neighbor idslands increasing at a rapid rate, the issues of the long term limits of growth, planning, and the sustainability of essential island natural resources require immediate attention" Good for research on what governent can do/is doing to advance a sustainable future.
