During the month of September, the activities offered in Kuaihelani
will focus upon the theme of water or wai. We enjoyed a beautiful and
spiritual beginning of school from our opening chapel and these
activities will enhance that presentation. I believe these activities
and presentations are of interest to all ages and disciplines.

Presently, there is a Board of Water Supply exhibit called, "The Water
of Life" which is part of their educational program. The display covers
4 chapters of a 12-chapter booklet, which takes us on a journey of
water from ancient times, present and future. A limited supply of these
booklets are on hand for distribution to students from Grade 4 on up. A
limited supply of coloring books or activity books are available for
students K-3.

Arthur Aiu, a Community Relations Specialist from the Board of Water
Supply will be a guest speaker on the following days. His presentation
will cover "The Water of Life" exhibit which includes the water cycle,
ancient Hawaiian practices and beliefs, sustainability and future water
use.

Another guest speaker is Kekai Kealoha '78 (sister of Kehau
Kealoha-Scullion) who is the project manager with Common Heritage
Corporation. Check out their website for more information at
commonheritagecorp.com. She will give a power point presentation about
the company's technological endeavors toward sustainability and the use
of the ocean to provide water, food and energy. Her dates and times are
as follows:

The third guest speaker that we will have is Donna Kahakui '82 from the
Environmental Protective Agency and founder of a non-profit
organization called Kai Makana. She will speak about her organization
and ways in which we can conserve and protect our precious resources
such as the ocean.

We will also have Dexter Keala Soares, a local artist who creates ipu
and hue wai (gourd and water containers). He will be on hand to
demonstrate his craft on the following days.

On display in Kuaihelani are the artistic creations of students from
grade 5 in Cathryn Lau's art class who have used interesting
techniques, scriptoral verses or 'olelo no'eau to represent Ka Wai Ola
or the waters of life unique to Ka Punahou.

Songs, dances and games about water can be taught upon request. When
arranging a visit, please let Hattie know if this is an interest for
your class.

If you aren't interested or available to hear our guest speakers or
presenters, then you might want to visit to simply view our display,
obtain handouts or enjoy some songs and dances. Whatever your desires,
call Angie Oh or Hattie Phillips to make an appointment to visit
Kuaihelani and to take advantage of these activities and guest speakers.
