Punahou School announced that Bernard Gusman, head coach for girls varsity tennis, is stepping down as coach in order to devote more time to his family, and to focus on directing the Punahou Tennis School. The Tennis School has one of the largest USPTA-certified tennis coaching staffs in the state of Hawai'i, serving students in group and private lessons and on teams.

Gusman has been head coach for girls varsity tennis at Punahou since 1993, helping the team capture 10 consecutive state titles from 2003 - 2012. The ILH has named him girls varsity tennis coach of the year numerous times, most recently in 2012.

"Bernard has left an indelible mark on tennis with a standard of coaching excellence that has garnered national recognition," said Jeaney Garcia, Punahou School Athletic Director. "We are pleased that he will continue to play a major role in youth athletics as director of the Punahou Tennis School."

"It has been an honor and a privilege to coach such talented and dedicated student-athletes these past 20 years," said Gusman, who emphasized that he will continue to assist with student progress on the courts.

The school will post an announcement of the position in the coming weeks on www.punahou.edu. For more information, please call Punahou School's Human Resources Department at 944-5783.
