Strong back posture

Lee Couillard, USPTA, Head Tennis Professional, Punahou School shows a simple device you can make to get your students to stay in a straight back or strong back body posture position. By lowering your Center of Gravity (COG) your body produces stored elastic energy. Your feet should have a wide base to support dynamic balance.

Punahou Tennis Rules!

I saw something similar to this on a different site and didn't see the point, but your post is much clearer. Appreciate it!

My wife always raises up 4-5 inches on her backswing, changing her spine angle in the process. She has a rather long backswing. We have worked on keeping her to stay down and shortening her backswing, but these fixes have not solved the problem. Does anyone know of a good drill to fix this problem once and for all? I want my wife and me to stay down like this guy in the video.

I find myself coming to your site more and more often to the point where my visits are almost daily now!

Thanks,

Great site Tennis pod pro!! I would like to add a view things when in the strong back posture.

First, make sure neither of your two hands have gotten too strong on the racket. I most commonly find the right hand to be the culprit for the two handed right handers.

Second, make sure you are not trying to hit "up" too much on the ball. Your head will drop back and increase your spine tilt too far. This excessive tilt will cause you to swing up dramatically while opening the racketface much earlier than normal.

The further away the shoulder and arm get from the ball, the more the more the contact point is made in from at impact.

Lastly, ACCELERATE!!! Don't just throw the racket at the ball, accelerate PAST it. The finish is as important as the beginning athletic stance.
